The ELECTRIC FLAME SCALLOP
Diving our 'Juno Wreck' is not only enjoyable for the wreck itself but also for the surrounding coral reef and its marine life.
A little treasure that we have come across is the Electric Flame Scallop, which is a rare & beautiful find.
This little scallop has had a friend, Banded Shrimp, placed in front, making it hard for us to see it in detail. However, the blue flashing lights running across the mantle and the long red tentacles are still visible behind the shrimp.
Its thanks to this shrimp, which is what first attracted us to this particular crevice, of many on the head coral formation.
No doubt, we'd still be swimming right past and we wouldn't know what little treasure was hidden away.
Below you will find a more detailed description:
The Electric Flame Scallop, also called the Red Electric Flame Scallop has a bright red mantel with red tentacles. The mantel of this species seems to create electricity which can be seen shooting across the mantel like lightning bolts. These surges of electricity are bright enough to be seen day & night. The shell of the various Flame Scallops is covered with fine bumps, making it feel like a file.
The Electric Flame Scallop builds a small nest of small rocks and pieces of coral in which it embeds itself for protection. When threatened, it may escape by clapping its valves together, propelling it through the water, with assistance from its tentacles. It tolerates all animals that do not try to eat it. It is a filter feeder, feeding on floating micro-plankton.
